Piano Sonata #21 in D-flat major - Love Letters
"Piano Sonata #21 in D-flat major" (Love Letters) originally composed in 2020 as "Ballade - Song Without Words," was subsequently finished in its complete form and presented as a YouTube premiers in April of 2022. The opening theme can be characterized as an engaging and lovely melody, creating an agreeably sentimental mood that suggests the smooth and graceful dance of a ballerina. Her imaginary choreography moves through the second theme as an unfolding dialogue that seems to expand the congenial happiness established at the outset. Dark clouds that form at the very end of the exposition burst without warning into a tumultuous, tormented outpouring of sadness, grief, disbelief and anger. The unexpected and unanticipated revelation of unrequited love is given onomatopaeic expression in the music, reminding us the love letters don't always say what we want them to. As the emotional outburst subsides, the return of the first theme causes the sun to shine again, but this time tempered by a chastened and no longer complacent sense of well-being. The sonata ends with a warily optimistic feeling of tranquility.
